Turkey has two long distance trekking routes: The Lycian Way –opened in 1999, and The St Paul Trail –opened in 2004.

Both trails are about 500km long. Kate Clow with Terry Richardson researched designed and implemented both trails. Many other volunteers, including Atil Ulas Cuce and Kerem Karaerkek, who own Middle Earth Travel, helped. Kate and Terry produced the guide books and maps to the two trails, assisted by George Zsiga, who drew the maps and Ueli Aellig and others who took GPS readings.

Both trails are 'way-marked' with red-white paint flashes every 100m or less. Both are described in the guide books and maps. Before you walk, you can get up to date information on the 'update' pages of this web site.

The Lycian Way trail was authorised by the Turkish Government (Tourism and Culture Ministry). Way-marking of The Lycian Way was sponsored by Garanti Bank. The Tourism and Culture Ministry are preparing a short guide to the Lycian Way. The St Paul Trail was authorised by the Forestry Ministry and has not been sponsored.

The Lycian Way and St Paul Trail Projects consist of:

Books which give you background and historical information about the areas, and describe the routes in detail, with times and distances. The St Paul Trail book also has altitude profiles and lists of GPS points. Each book includes a map which shows key points on the route. Use the books to plan your walking holiday; the maps to check each day's walking.

The Way Marking makes it easy to follow the route. Paths are way-marked in red and white stripes to Grande Randonnee standards. The Lycian Way has yellow and green signposts at the junction of the route with metalled roads.

Walking and Trekking in the Kaçkar

Kate and Terry's new project is a guide book to the Kaçkar mountains. Situated in the far north-east of Turkey, the Kaçkar rise dramatically above the Black Sea, close to the Georgian frontier. The range boasts exquisite alpine lakes, verdant, flower-studded meadows, glaciers, towering granite peaks with views of the Pontus/Black Sea, richly forested valleys and a wealth of unique and beautiful flora. This compact region is a trekkers' paradise. The guidebook to the route includes 32 routes, ranging from treks of several days across the range to half-day walks from a local pension. The routes are all marked on the excellent contour map included with the guide, and are backed up by GPS points and altitude diagrams.
